Bringing the outside in – gardens, garden rooms & conservatories

Gardens, garden rooms & conservatories

On the back of the recent renovation of The Royal Botanic Garden of Kew’s Temperate house. We look at our own search for the perfect outdoor garden room in which to bring the outside in.

We are all yearning for an extra room in our homes and nothing can create the sense of space more than adding to our current home footprint. A garden room, conservatory or if one has the garden for it a garden office/studio like us here at Harris Jackson.

Conservatories & Garden rooms offer the perfect antidote to our unpredictable British summers. While we currently amaze in the soaring temperature afforded us this summer, a shady cool summer room can offer some blissful respite, and in wetter times a space in which to sejourn under cover. Take advantage of the south facing side of your house by adding a conservatory or orangery.

Marston & Langinger

Marston & Langinger offer the most exquisite structures for the eternal botanist. Not only can they offer a completely bespoke service, but their garden rooms offer a free standing double glazed structure situated separately from your property. They are a great way to create an all weather sanctuary and escape from the house. Now made entirely from powder coated aluminium one doesn’t have the maintenance issues that the traditional wood structures would face.

Alternatively their conservatories provide one of the most practical ways to transform your home. These additions can also increase the amount of light cascading into your home as well as improving the flow and access out to your garden. Their buildings can also create a separate entertaining area, dining room or office over and above the typical sun room.

Colour me beautiful

Colours within a garden room need to promote serenity and relaxation. White walls will amplify the light and prevent a space feeling too cramped. It is also an excellent base for which plants can be adorned. While neutral chalky colours will also keep the space cool and fresh.

Garden rooms and conservatories of whatever size allow us to select wonderful stylish furniture suitable for indoors & out in bright colours & natural materials. ‘Les materiaux du jour” are as ever rattan, teak and wicker but they now embrace new friends rope, concrete, bamboo, zinc & Applewood.

Take this Loop sofa by Vincent Shepherd, intricately woven rope/cord used to create an airy soft take on the classical Lloyd Loom!

We love the indoor/outdoor collections from Sutherlands @ Chelsea Harbour Design Centre where style is never forfeited over function. Take their stunning “Reeded collection” by John Hutton (see below). The pieces are striking blends of clean lines & honest detailing, for instance fluted/reeded details at each leg and the exquisite dovetail joinery.

A touch of retro

Dedon bring a feeling of retro into the garden room this year with their “Swingme Lounge Chair”. This light 60’s inspired swivel chair would sit beautifully in a contemporary garden room bringing a touch of Austin Powers to your space. If you don’t want the floor standing version then how about opting for the actual “swingme” suspended design. Perfect for one person allowing one to get comfortable in many positions.

Outdoor Rugs

Furnishing a garden room whether it be totally under cover & water tight or open to the elements can even extend to the flooring. Gone are the days where we are expected to put up with hard architectural finishes at our feet, however chic they may be. Now we can choose from outdoor rugs that can withstand the elements. One of our favourites is the outdoor rug collection from Perennials. Their artisanal handwoven flat weave collection combine subtle colour blending & a beautifully soft feel. Take for instance “Crescendo” in grey matter and “Lucky Streak” in blue jean.

One of our favourites for outdoor lighting is “Garden Trading”. They offer invaluable solutions in contemporary styles and classic designs at very affordable prices. GT have a wide selection of outdoor lamps and HJ love the Belfast wall light in Charcoal steel, a contemporary touch on the old lanterns from bygone shipping eras.
